MedEd Connections Resource Guide: Blind and Visually Impaired (B/VI)
Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
A certified orientation and mobility specialist (COMS) assesses the mobility skills of students who are blind or visually impaired (B/VI) and develops instructions based on the results of those assessments. They teach students who are B/VI how to independently navigate and move around safely in schools, at home, and in the community with or without a cane depending on your child’s functional vision. COMS can also teach students about low-vision devices, mobility assistive technology, binoculars, and body awareness.
