Blind / Visual Impairment Basics

Understanding how clearly someone can see, and how much they can see around them, makes a big difference when we think about how they make connections with the world. Being blind or visually impaired can happen in a lot of different ways: some people are born blind or with vision loss, some experience trauma, some have vision that gets worse over time no matter their age. Each person’s path is different, which means each person’s needs are different.

To help a person with vision loss engage in school, at home, and in the community, we want to understand their challenges, and offer support, as soon as we can. Educators and families that understand what vision loss means, and how it might be impacting someone’s everyday experiences, have a greater ability to share tools and instruction that leads to better outcomes for life.
