A wealth of resources are available to help families understand their legal rights and navigate the legal and educational systems on behalf of their child.

Want to know what your rights as a guardian are?

Want to learn about special education law and advocacy?

Want to see all of the special education forms that you and your school team will complete together?

Your school team wants your child to be well educated and successful. If you need assistance locating supplemental aids and service personnel within the larger educational system, families and the school team may contact their district’s state support team (SST) or their educational service center (ESC) for assistance.

Ohio ESC Association

Phone: (614) 846-3855

Please note, not all districts join the Ohio ESC Association.

State Support Teams-Ohio Department of Education

Families and schools may also contact Ohio’s Office for Exceptional Children (OEC) or Ohio’s Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities (OCECD) . You may invite a neutral third-party negotiator from OEC to meet with you and the school team to assist in reaching an agreement.

Finally, if problems persist, you can instigate a due process hearing. If you need further information, please refer to “dispute resolution” on the Ohio Department for Education’s (ODE) website.
