Overview

Ohio requires that all learners have access to literacy instruction grounded in scientific research. All students benefit from explicit and systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing to become effective readers. This module series is designed to provide practitioners and administrators with the information they need to implement cued speech/language as an evidence-based multisensory tool to connect language and literacy for learners who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate cued speech, used for cued language, and the corresponding phonemes.
  • Explain the phonics scope and sequence and how cued language can be a means of access to these skills for deaf and hard of hearing learners.
  • Describe three multisensory reading strategies and how cued language can be used to provide access when using them.
  • Identify potential barriers in implementing cued language and multisensory reading strategies in your classroom, with your caseload, and list potential solutions.

Dr. Jennifer Montgomery is a teacher of the Deaf or hard of hearing in a public school district and supports students k-12 with a range of learning needs. She uses American Sign Language, Cued Language, and spoken language to teach language and literacy using multisensory methods and science of reading programs. She has taught this approach to graduate students at Columbia University for 20 years as an adjunct associate professor. Her dissertation was the first study of the Orton Gillingham method, supported with Cued Language, in a public school district.

Cathy Rasmussen, PhD, CCC-SLP, is dean of the College of Interprofessional Health and Human Services of Nazareth University in Rochester, NY. At Nazareth, she established and co-directed the Deafness Specialty Preparation program, a joint program with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, to prepare speech-language pathologists for work with deaf children. Rasmussen has served as president of the National Cued Speech Association and has presented on the use of cueing for communication, phonemic awareness, and literacy to a wide variety of parent and professional audiences.

Various organizations have approved modules and webinars in the Learning Hub for continuing education credit.
