In partnership with the Ohio Department of Education, the Outreach Center for Deafness and Blindness at OCALI presents a video module, Promoting Access for People Who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, or Visually Impaired.

Information is everywhere you look and everywhere you listen. When vision or hearing is affected, part of that information is missing, and this can create hurdles. This makes getting strategies in place important so that you can support access to information and open up opportunities for meaningful participation for everyone.

This training will get you started with basic strategies to begin building relationships and engaging in basic supports. It will empower you in strengthening your connections with people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired at home, at school, and in the community.

Hear Authentic Perspectives

Information connects us, empowers us, and promotes independence. When we are better prepared to help promote independence for students with disabilities, they are able to grow, learn, and live their best lives. In this module you’ll hear perspectives from people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired, their families, community members, co-workers, educators, and others about how they’ve worked together to increase opportunities for independence through improved access.

This self-paced training module offers a collection of introductory information, evidence-based strategies, and scenarios at home, school, and in the community designed to build confidence and comfort for anyone communicating or connecting with people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or visually impaired.

You will get answers to common questions such as:

  • How do I communicate with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing if I don’t know sign language?
  • What are some environmental considerations for making my classroom more accessible?
  • How can I increase opportunities for participation in my community?

Introduction

In this module, you will gain insight into factors that can impact how a person receives information using sight, sound and touch. You will also learn some simple and effective strategies to get you started with some basic supports.
